AMD Presents Their Sulon Q VR Headset - The Banner Herald

AMD Presents Their Sulon Q VR Headset

Sulon Q will take a stab at HTC Vive

Sulon Q will take a stab at HTC Vive

Virtual reality is a growing market that has not even reached full bloom yet. In fact, the seeds have only been planted and the world is still waiting for its first flowers to appear. The gaming community, in particular, is waiting for titans such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR to find their way onto the market.

Later this month, Facebook will grace us with their highly-anticipated VR headset, followed by HTC’s in April, and then Sony’s at some point in the summer. However, while these are the three that everyone is looking forward to, they’re not the only ones planning on swooping us into a new, immersive world. There are big players still waiting to make their way on the market.

AMD is best known for making excellent graphics cards that rival nVidia, with some arguing they’re better while others claim it’s worse. It’s the same Samsung versus Apple debate that has tech enthusiasts debating. However, it’s safest to say they’re well matched rivals, and one will always try to up the other. Thankfully, the players might just profit from that due to the battle of high performance at the lowest cost possible.

Now, however, AMD is tackling the virtual reality world. The major tech company has joined hands with Canadian startup Sulon to create their very own VR headgear. The companies have started their work on Sulon Q, another high-powered headset that is expected to perk the brows of a few gamers. However, there are two things that could make Sulon Q a success among a series of other VR headsets. And that’s besides the fact that it’s powered by AMD’s reputation of excellence.

First of all, the upcoming Sulon Q will be targeting both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). That means that it’s inching closer to HTC Vive’s abilities of tracking down the environment around it. It will allow users to interact with their environment in an entirely new way. In the meantime, they will also be immersed into another world. Powered by AMD’s Liquid VR, the company is already looking to collaborations that would expand the headset’s use beyond gaming.

While it could be a potential powerhouse for video games, due to its exceptional graphics, Sulon Q will also be looking into other domains it could help. That ranges from education, to medicine, training, simulations, and many more. So, it’s essentially a high-performing Google Glass mixed with Oculus Rift.

The second aspect is the most unique one about the VR headset. Sulon Q will be the first virtual reality platform that is entirely untethered by wires. It’s “the world’s first and only all-in-one, wear-and-play” VR headset. That means no wires anchoring users down to a high-powered computer or keeping them in their living room. The headgear will be powered by its own ‘tiny computer’ strapped comfortably to the back.

Sulon Q will include Radeon R7 graphics, 8GB of RAM DDR3, and 256GB of SSD, Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity and 802.11ac WiFi. It will also have AMD’s FX-8800P APU. The headset will launch at some point mid-2016, and it remains to be seen if its advantages will be enough to overtake the other VR titans.
