All popular adventure games with a big budget offer post-launch downloadable content (DLC). The Zelda Series made by Nintendo has successfully resisted this increasingly popular trend until now. They announced that the new Legend of Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, will receive two DLC packs later this year.
The packs can be purchased together as a bundle, for only $19.99. They are to be released this summer and, respectively, this holiday season. However, you can purchase them starting with March 3rd. Those who buy them earlier will be granted instant access to three treasure chests that hide “useful items” and “exclusive in-game clothing”.
The first DLC pack contains certain gameplay features which many people think that should have been available in the main game. These include a challenge mode called “Cave of Trials”, a mode with a harder level of difficulty, and an additional map feature.
The second DLC pack is more likely to reach the fans’ expectations regarding DLC content. It is more similar to typical DLS, so it contains a new story, a new dungeon, and several new challenges.
Eiji Aonuma, the producer of the Zelda series, released a video where he talked about the DLC packs. He said that this additional content was meant to offer new adventures and experiences to all inveterate Hyrule explorers.
He hopes that this new content will be regarded as exciting by the old Zelda fans and will not allow them to get bored. Maybe they will succeed in attracting more players to the game.
This is the first time when the Zelda series gets DLC packs. However, Hyrule Warriors and Triforce Attacks, which take place in the same universe, featured DLCs. Nintendo also released DLCs for other games, such as new characters and levels of difficulty for Mario Kart 8.
The concept of DLC is not enjoyed by many, since they blame this practice for charging extra for some features that should have been present in the original game.
Breath of the Wild has been delayed many times. Its initial release was scheduled for 2015, then it got delayed for 2016 and then further delayed for March 2017. If they had released the content from these two DLC packs at the same time with the game, this would have meant to delay the entire release even more.
This is why making DLC packs for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild might have been a good idea, after all.
