The American ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, expressed anger at the UN body for its vote against the United States’ recent Jerusalem decision.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would now recognize the city as the capital of Israel, eventually moving its embassy there. The United Nations responded by trying to pass a resolution calling for the withdrawal of this recognition.
The Reasons Offered by Nikki Haley
The move was purely symbolic, however, since the United States has veto power, and would not be binding even if it could pass. In the end, every nation voted in favor of the measure before Haley, calling it “an insult,” nixed it.
She said that “The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy.”
Haley added that being forced to use the veto against the unanimous vote is not really a “source of embarrassment” for the US. Instead, she considers that it should be an ’embarrassment’ for the other members of the Security Council.
Israel declared Jerusalem to be its capital back in 1949. This happened even though at the time, half of the city was being occupied by Jordan, which took control during the Israeli War of Independence and exiled its Jewish residents.
Israel gained complete control of the coveted city in the 1967 Six-Day War. However, the Palestinians also want half or all of the town for their own future capital. As such, most nations refuse to acknowledge Israel’s claim to it and instead keep their embassies in the nation’s second-largest city, Tel Aviv.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, posted a tweet to reiterate his thanks for the United States’ support.
Thank you, Ambassador Haley. On Hanukkah, you spoke like a Maccabi. You lit a candle of truth. You dispel the darkness. One defeated the many. Truth defeated lies. Thank you, President Trump. Thank you, Nikki Haley. pic.twitter.com/zFIiStoait
