On Sunday, the final episode of the seventh season of Game of Thrones came with lots of revelations. However, maybe the biggest one of them concerned the true identity and parentage of Jon Snow. The boy who thought he was a worthless bastard and got sent to the Wall proved to be the most important person in the entire Westeros. Beware! Spoilers ahead!
Jon’s true parentage
Now that there are only six episodes left until the entire series will come to an end, the fact that some characters finally know who Jon Snow really is might change Westeros forever. During Sunday’s episode, Bran Stark talked with Sam Tarly and the two put two and two together. Those two characters knew parts of the story and now they managed to discover the truth. Jon Snow’s parents are Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Moreover, his real name is Aegon Targaryen. This name might sound familiar.
Aegon was also the name of the man who built the Iron Throne and brought together six kingdoms out of seven. His surname was Aegon the Conqueror or Aegon I Targaryen. Could this reveal take a poetic turn and put Jon at the center of everything that has been going on in this series? After all, George R. R. martin’s story began with Aegon the Conqueror. It’s only fitting that it should end with another.
The history of the Aegon rulers is a long one. After Aegon the Conqueror, there have been other four Aegons who ended up on the Iron Throne as part of the Targaryen Dynasty. It’s interesting and bizarre that Aegon was also the name of Rhaegar’s other baby, the one he had with his first wife, Elia Martell. Unfortunately, him, his mother and his sister were al murdered by the Mountain.
Also, this reveal could mean trouble for Daenerys. As the son of the crown prince, Jon has the strongest claim to the throne. So, it will be interesting to see how Dany will react to this news and what her next actions will be. Will they form an alliance and rule together, or will she try to get rid of him?
