The host from the Last Week Tonight Show, John Oliver has slammed on the Republicans for arguing against gun control by bringing up mental health problem in America.
Republicans like Mike Huckabee, Donald Trump and Ben Carson has argued against gun control by bringing up mental illness after the recent shooting.
Oliver has devoted his whole episode to the 2016 GOP presidential candidates, who in the wake of the shooting in Roseberg, Oregon that have killed 10 innocent people, have referred endless arguments against gun control and mental illness. He stated that politicians who mistakenly blame mental illness for mass shooting are either entirely heartless or they are poorly informed.
He said, “The aftermath of a mass shooting might actually be the worst time to talk about mental health. Because for the record, the vast majority of mentally ill people are nonviolent,” calling out candidates like Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson and Donald Trump.
Oliver said that even though mostly mass murders are blamed on mental illness but the records have something different to say about, where the vast majority of people with mental illness do not have a history of violence and are usually nicer than the healthy people and then pointed to the fact that the vast majority of gun violence is committed by non-mentally ill people.
Supporting the facts with the statistics as published by the research in the American Journal of Public Health in February, where between 2001 and 2010, 120,000 gun related killing occurred with less than 5 percent were carried out by people suffering from serious mental diseases.
Oliver then brings up with another alarming statistics, where the jails are the largest mental health providers in the United States. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Treatment Advocacy, 2 million inmates with mental illness go to state and local jails every year. Many young mental ill people are places in nursing homes as a means of treatment aside from the criminal justice system.
“Finding out jails are our largest provider of mental health treatment is like finding out Lil’ Wayne is our greatest source of sexual education. No, Darren. You can’t ‘flip it up and serve it like a spatula,’ where did you even learn that?”
These politicians claim to be “pretty motivated to address this problem,” Oliver snarked. “OK, fine—do it then,” he demanded. “Because, if we’re going to constantly use mentally ill people to dodge conversations about gun control, then the very least we owe them is a f*cking plan.”
