NASA Is One Step Closer to Launching James Webb Space Telescope

NASA continues the tests on the James Webb Space Telescope

NASA will soon launch its newest space telescope. The James Webb Space Telescope has already undergone a series of tests and is now only a few steps away from the launching. This is big news, since James Webb is the biggest telescope ever used, which will look deep into the universe, further than any other telescope before.

NASA has already started making preparations for the launching of the telescope. On Thursday, they even allowed the public to witness some of these undertakings. However, they will have to wait a little more until the James Webb Space Telescope is ready for use. Its official launching is scheduled for October 2018, in French Guyana.

Why is this telescope so special?

Dr. John Mather, scientist from the Goddard Space Flight Center, explained that this telescope could offer astronomers an amazing view into space. They can see up to 13.8 billion light-years away from Earth, which is further than they could ever see.

It also uses an advanced technology which allows it to penetrate infrared light. It has a series of light detectors and spectrometers. These look at the chemical composition of objects, thus catching emissions among space. This is important, since astronomers can spot organic molecules and even identify potential exoplanets.

Therefore, the astronomers will be able to take a peek at the birth of the universe. Since it reaches so far away, they can witness the first stars and galaxies which burst out after the big bang. Also, they will see how the first black holes came into being.

The successor of Hubble Space Telescope

Scientists put the James Webb Space Telescope through a lot of tests. The toughest one simulated the conditions during a rocket launch. They put it under the same vibration and sound levels and saw if it can remain in place in such a brutal environment.

All the best scientists and researchers worked together for the development of this telescope. It was born out of the collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency. They succeeded in designing the worthy successor of Hubble Space Telescope.

James Webb Space Telescope is expected to complete the series of revolutionary discoveries made by its predecessor. Hubble was well-known for finding dark matter into space, observing supermassive black holes, and offered astronomers a view of many mysterious cosmic objects.
