The season 7 finale of Game of Thrones fulfilled a long-standing wish of the majority of fans. Lord Petyr Baelish, or Littlefinger, as everyone knew him, was accused of treason and murder in the Great Hall of Winterfell by Sansa and Arya Stark, who tricked the trickster. Arya carried out the execution and slit his throat while Littlefinger was begging for his life and saying to Sansa that he loved both her and her mother. However, how does the actor behind such a manipulative character feel in this circumstance? Aidan Gillen surely knows.
Littlefinger got what he deserved
During the interview, the actor admitted that he hadn’t yet seen the season finale because the Wi-fi connection in his United Kingdom hotel was very weak. Also, he preferred it this way because he didn’t want to see himself die on screen too soon.
Gillen remembered that he found out Littlefinger was going to die a month before starting shooting. He got a call from D. B. Weiss and David Benioff and he knew that there was no way out this time. Fortunately, the actor admitted that having filmed that scene a little earlier set him free. He couldn’t explain it, but he felt free of a burden.
As for the timing of his death, Gillen said he expected it to happen, if not in Season 7, then surely in Season 8. Also, he said that he preferred to die in the season finale then in any other normal episode of Game of Thrones.
It was difficult for Aidan Gillen to play a character that so many fans want dead. Also, Littlefinger was extremely shocked when one of the people he loves, Sansa, was the one to pass the sentence. He never could have imagined it to be her. But in the end, he wasn’t that clever and eventually got exactly what he deserved.
